(HEDIN, Sven.) Central Asia And Tibet. Towards The Holy City of Lassa.

£0.00
sold out

First Edition. Two Volumes. Large 8vo., Vol. I., pp. xviii, (3), 608; Vol. II., pp. xiv, (2), 664. Two frontispiece portraits, 420 illustrations from drawings and photographs, eight full page coloured plates, and five maps on four folding sheets. Bound in the Publisher’s red cloth, gilt titled to the spine, gilt illustrated and titled to the front board, top edges gilt. Published by Hurst and Blackett Limited (London), 1903.

A little bumping to the top and bottom of the spine, otherwise a fine copy. The UK First Edition of this work is significantly rarer than the US First Edition, especially in such collectible condition.

In this work, Sven Hedin recounts his over 6,000 miles journey through Central Asia and Tibet from 1899-1902. Some of the notable areas Hedin travelled through included the Tarim Basin, Calcutta, Kashmir and the Kaidu and Yarkand Rivers. His account provides a fascinating insight into the people he encountered, their cultures, customs and religious beliefs. This is an important work in the evolution of travel and exploration, as it provided the first account of Central Asian regions which were yet to be recorded. The maps and illustrations published in this work provided a guide to future explorers of this region. (Yakushi H100b, H174b; Cordier 2852; Taylor 61; 148; Lloyd 194; Hopkirk 145.)
