With Biographical Anecdotes Of Royal And Distinguished Persons, Deduced From Records, State-Papers, And Manuscripts, And From Other Original And Authentic Sources. In Two Parts.

First Edition. Two Volumes. Large 4to (31 * 25cm). Published for T. Cadell, in The Strand (London), 1821-1825, at £6 16s 6d. and paginated continuously. Vol. 1, pp. xiv, (ii), 272, xxxiv, (ii.), Vol. II, pp. vi, (ii), 273 - 672, xxxv - cxxviii, (xviii). Some errors of pagination and with inserted Publisher’s slip regarding publication of the second volume and also indicating “only a limited number of copies have been printed”. With two frontispieces and 25 plates as listed. Handsomely bound in later 19th century half morocco, gilt, with marbled boards and endpapers, lightly rubbed and a little marked.

Some occasional light foxing and marginal browning, but otherwise a clean and superior copy. Very good.

The volumes contain the 1883 Armorial bookplate of Charles Arthur Wynne Finch (1841-1903) of Voelas, Denbighshire.

The first and best edition, the reprint of 1830 being a abridgement. “As an antiquary Bayley’s attainments were of a high order. His History of the Tower ranks among the very best of works of its kind for excellence of style, acuteness of judgement, and unfailing accuracy of statement” - DNB.
