A Typed Letter Signed by Winston Churchill to Alderman Donald Forbes, dated 30 September 1959, 1pp. on Chartwell printed letterhead, signed by Churchill at foot.
Creases to letter where originally folded into envelope, small hole punch to upper left corner of the paper; near fine.
The letter reads as follows:
“My dear Forbes,
This is only a line written while the battle is still in progress to thank you for your hospitality and general help. There is no doubt that you are steering Woodford and Wanstead to announcing victory.
With all good wishes and many thanks,
Believe me,
Winston Churchill”
A wonderful letter of thanks by Churchill to his friend Alderman Donald Forbes for his help during the 1959 general election campaign. The day before the date of the letter Churchill delivered the last major political speech of his life at his Woodford constituency. Churchill held his seat in the general election a few days later on the 8th October 1959, however his majority fell by more than 1,000 votes. It was to be his last term in Parliament. The Conservative Party achieved a landslide general election victory under the leadership of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan.
Forbes was Mayor of Wanstead and Woodford, and Chairman of the Woodford Conservative Association. Forbes and Churchill were close, with Forbes providing steadfast support to Churchill in his political campaigns. A day after the date of the letter, Forbes is quoted in the News Chronicle as stating:
“This constituency is not like all others. We are not necessarily occupied with convincing electors that they should vote for our candidate. We in Woodford are trustees on behalf of the nation with the responsibility of ensuring that so long as Sir Winston is able and willing we must send him back to the House of Commons.”
