(HASWELL-MILLER, Archibald Eliot.) Scots Guards Watercolour Drawings.
A unique volume containing ten original watercolour drawings by Archibald Eliot Haswell-Miller of selected orders of dress worn by the Scots Guards since Prince Henry (1900-1974), H.R.H. The Duke of Gloucester, became Colonel of the Regiment in 1936. This beautiful work was originally presented to H.R.H. The Duke of Gloucester in 1961 on the occasion of his review of the Regiment commemorating his 25th year as their Colonel.
Quarto (33cm*29cm). Calligraphic manuscript presentation leaf in red, blue and black ink with gilt device at foot, calligraphic manuscript contents leaf in blue and black ink, 10 watercolour drawings mounted on card, each signed at foot by the artist and dated, calligraphic manuscript caption beneath each watercolour drawing. Finely bound in full red Morocco by Asprey & Co. with their binder’s signature to the front turn-in, spine lettered in gilt, gilt raised bands, panels framed with single pallets, the Scots Guards Regimental Badge in gilt to upper cover, wide dentelles, all edges gilt.
A few minor spots to one sheet of card, otherwise in fine condition.
Archibald Eliot Haswell-Miller (1887-1979) was born in Glasgow and studied at The Glasgow School Of Art. He specialised in painting military portraits, and examples of his work is held by noted museums and special collections around the world.
During World War One Haswell-Miller served with the Blythswood Rifles and was a member of the expeditionary force which captured Jerusalem in 1917. Towards the end of World War One he served on the Western Front. He was decorated with a Military Cross for his service. During the Second World War he served in Intelligence, working as a Captain in the Prisoner of War Interrogation Section.
Haswell-Miller taught at The Glasgow School Of Art from 1910-1930. He later worked for the National Galleries of Scotland between 1930-1952, where he rose to become the Deputy Director. He was a member of numerous art bodies such as the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, the Royal Scottish Academy, and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. He married the noted Scottish artist, Josephine Haswell Miller (1890-1975) in 1916, and they had one daughter called Sylvia.
